Overview

The Waffen-SS (German: "Armed SS", or "Weapons SS") was the combat arm of the Schutzstaffel ("Protective Squadron") or SS, an organ of the Nazi Party. The Waffen-SS saw action throughout World War II and the First Scinfaxi War, earning extensive honours and renown for their steadfastness and unrelenting discipline. It was the Fuhrer's will that the Waffen-SS never be integrated into the Army: they were to remain the armed wing of the Party and serve the Fuhrer as a reliable combat force alongside the Wehrmacht.

History

Founded

The origins of the Waffen-SS can be traced to the 120 man group under the command of Josef 'Sepp' Dietrich, which formed Sonderkommando Berlin. It's birth into a combat formation however, is traced to the SS-Verfügungstruppe or SS-VT, which was formed to be a specialist military force under the Fuhrer's command.

In 1936 Heinrich Himmler selected former Lieutenant General Paul Hausser to be Inspector of the SS-VT with the rank of Brigadefuhrer, and he set about transforming the SS-VT into a credible military force that was a match for the Heer. Whilst it would not match the Heer in terms of numerical strength, it would go onto being an elite arm of the Reich, a shining example of Aryan military prowess, National Socialism and a reliable political statement to the other nations of Germany's military power.

With the colonization of Germania, and subsequent founding of an interstellar Greater German Reich, the Waffen-SS would slowly grow its own independent naval and aerospace forces. Already, the Waffen-SS could boast its own Fallschirmjäger (Paratrooper) unit, which would go onto be the first of dozens of such units.

Recruitment

Entry requirements into the Waffen-SS are exacting and strict; all SS officers must be of at least 5 foot 11 inchs, and of Aryan heritage.

Doctrine

The Waffen-SS strictly engage in mobile warfare, using swift assaults and ruthless tactics to defeat it's opponents. The result of this doctrine is non-attritional warfare, but nevertheless high casualties due to the Waffen-SS's lightning and relentless assaults, as well as it's superiority complex that dominates its ideological indoctrination and training programmes.

Ranks and Insignia

The Waffen-SS maintains its own ranking system to distinguish itself from the Wehrmacht, more specifically the Heer. It was granted the honour of utilizing 'führer' in it's titles and ranks, a sign of favour from the Fuhrer and successive Fuhrers over the Reich's history.

Whilst initially believed to be a part of the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht, KdWS is directly controlled by the Reichsführer-SS, and is considered by analysts as the personal army of the Führer, whom commands through the fanatically loyal Reichsführer-SS himself.

Sturmflotte

Sturmflotte (English: Storm Fleet) are permenant multirole commands differing from Kriegsmarine Battle Fleets in striking capability and force projection, supported by significant sustainment elements and logistics ships. They are named so after the Waffen-SS's aggressive doctrines and the honourary entitlement of 'sturm' to Waffen-SS units and ranks.

Flottegruppe

A Flottegruppe (English: Fleet Group) consists of two or more Flotillas for administrative purposes, whilst each attending Squadron is placed under the command of the commanding officer - a Flottegruppenführer.

Flotilla

A German Flotilla is commanded by an Flottegruppenführer, and can number from two squadrons to include a total of fifty warships in total, of varying tonnage and class. Flotillas are largely administrative commands over Squadrons and the myriad of logistical and support units that supply them.

Schwadron

A Führermarine Schwadron (English: Squadron) operates from four to eighteen ships, commanded by a Obersflotteführer.

Ship Command

A German Ship Command is the entire command structure of a warship from the size of a corvette to the largest capital ship. This is the lowest command in Führermarine, enabling greater autonomy for deep space patrols and commerce raiding. A Ship Command can be commanded Oberstkapitänführer to an Admiralführer.
