Overview
Vega is the capital planet of the Vega System and by far the most populated. Its climate is primarily subtropical and is somewhat hotter than the majority of planets within the Orion Arm. Originally controlled a puppet-state of the Greater German Reich, The Imperium of Deutschland, a period of succession and civil war ended with the establishment of the New Weimar Republic and the collapse of the Imperium. Currently it is the site of the largest campaign of the Soviet-German War with the Imperium having been reformed to act as a German ally.
History
Colonization
Long since ingrained in the culture of humanity, and the subject of intense study as early as the 1800s, Vega was the first system photographed and scouted for the possibly of a human colony. When the presence of a world compatible with the early stages of terraforming technology was discovered, it became a candidate for the first extra-solar human colony, something that would ultimately be bestowed upon Alpha Centauri.
With Alpha Centauri failing to live up to expectations, and the alliance of the DF, USSR, and GGR on the verge of collapse, the Greater German Reich initiated their first solo effort to develop and extra solar colony. While the results of the terraforming were somewhat underwhelming a spacestation was constructed in orbit, and the first terrestrial based facilities were soon underway.
Vega was intended to be a hub world, from which to administer the development of dozens of new colonies across the Orion Arm. However, when the second German colony, Germania was founded, the importance of Vega was drastically reduced and the role of hub world was transferred to Germania.
With the resounding failure of the joint effort on Alpha Centauri, and renewed fears of Scinfaxi activity, Vega, like many other colonies within the Solar Sector were granted independence.
Independence
The new government of Vega, the Imperium of Deutschland was little more than a puppet government and despite officially being a neutral state, German investment into the colony was enormous. In the wake of the destruction of Earth, the Imperium begrudgingly allowed itself to become a “sanctuary world” in return for aid donations from the Democratic Federation.
The influx of refugees, like on many other worlds threatened the stability of the planet, but with continued foreign aid, the new populace was soon put to work exploiting the natural resources of Vega, and the Vega System.
Prosperity
As interstellar society developed and the first shipping lanes were fortified across the Orion Arm, the importance of the Vega System became increasingly clear. Acting as a “bridge” between the major superpowers in conjunction with New Geneva and Alpha Centauri, Vega was favorably located to receive a massive amount of traffic and trade.
This spurred the development of terrestrial and orbital based stations located both on Vega and throughout the Vega System.
It was during the construction of one such station that the vast mineral developments of the Argentine Moons were first discovered. With investment from the GGR and Tawhid, the Imperium was able to develop a massive orbital refinery and over 120 mining bases throughout the 7 Argentine Moons.
While the majority of the profits went to the German corporations brought in to develop the resources, it solidified Vegas place as an important system with the Orion Arm.
Secession
While German investment had turned Vega into a regional power, the majority of the citizenry of Vega were drastically opposed to the Greater German Reich. Anti-fascist parties began to rise in prominence and gain seats within the Imperium parliament.
While the anti-GGR demonstrations and rallies had been peaceful, the Imperium was faced with the possibility of a civil war between those still loyal to the GGR and those opposed to it. In a national vote 12 of the 19 provinces of the Imperium voted to secede from the Imperium, founding the New Weimar Republic.
Initially promising to remain neutral in the political affairs of the Orion Arm, the Government of the New Weimar Republic was slowly compromised by elements of the Weimar Communist Party, and by 2260, the Republic was considered by many to be a de-facto Soviet puppet state.
World War
See: Imperium-Weimar Civil War
With Vega now a proxy for the Soviet-German cold war, it was only a matter of time before the situation ignited, border conflicts between Weimar and the Imperium were occurring almost weekly. Finally in 2262 under the guise of responding to one such conflict, the Imperium began a blitzkrieg into Weimar Territory, leading to the Imperium-Weimar Civil War.
The war would last roughly five years, and while the casualties on both sides would be enormous, the Imperium’s industrial advantage was insufficient to content with the massive numerical advantage of the Weimar Republic.
The end of the conflict would lead to the unification of Vega under the New Weimar Republic.
Kharkov Pact
See: Kharkov Pact
With Vega united, the system was opened to numerous trading opportunities across the Orion Region, in particular, the Soviet Union. After years of mutual development, the New Weimar Republic became an official member of the Kharkov Pact. While this move was intended to protect the Vega system from an eventual GGR reprisal, it only convinced the German leadership further that decisive action against Vega was necessary.
Invasion
See: Soviet-German War
With the escalation of the Soviet-German War and the expansion of the front across Tanarsus, Galleria, and Orson, Vega struggled to maintain independence. This would prove to be in vain however, when in 2287 in the largest invasion in history, Battlefleet Germania commenced operations against Vega, opening a new front in the war, and decimating local resistance.
For nearly two years Vega has been the focal point for the conflict between the Greater German Reich and the Soviet Union. The site of some of the largest battles in history, the environment of Vega has suffered terribly under sustained orbital bombardment and battles across the planet’s surface.
Recently, it was discovered the damage to the ecosystem has been much more widespread than previously believed, with the Orion Environmental Commission releasing a report that the planet may be rendered uninhabitable by the end of the conflict. Over a quarter of the planet’s surface is suffering from intense ash clouds, with a large percentage of the planets water supply already tainted by contaminants.
