Overview

The Orion Region, also known as the Orion Arm, is the name given the extent of space currently inhabited by humanity. While the region covers an extremely vast distance, it represents only a minuscule section of the Milky Way galaxy.

Within the Orion Region there lie several thousand star systems, with millions of planets, moons, and all manner of asteroid belts, comets, and other celestial phenomena. Only a tiny fraction of these star systems contain inhabitable planets, with roughly 200 currently inhabited by humans.

Life within the region is not limited purely to humanity; thousands of species of animal and plant life have been discovered, most still relatively young on the evolutionary scale. Very few alien species have been discovered that match the complexity of those once found on Earth, and only two; the Scinfaxi and the Shi 'Nakh capable of interstellar flight.

For logistic and geographic purposes, the Orion Arm is divided into sectors, which themselves are divided into subsectors. The number of sectors and subsectors has increased as humanity began permanent settlement on more and more worlds, currently there are 9 sectors, each containing several dozen sub-sectors.

Travel

Travel between the worlds of the Orion Region has only been made possible by the advent of faster than light drives (FTL), distances that would take thousands or even hundreds of thousands of years to cross at sub-light speeds can now be navigated in a matter of months.

Within human occupied space, nearly the entirety of interstellar travel is conducted within designated shipping lanes. These lanes are regularly patrolled by international police organizations such as Interpol, various national defense forces, and supplemented by hundreds of space stations. While organized piracy and crime is still rampant throughout some parts of the network, it remains the safest means of interstellar travel.

Political Divisions

The human settlement of the Orion Region has created a number of seperate political blocs, the most prominant of these are those of the Superpowers and Regional Powers which make up a large portion of known space and span hundreds of systems. The remaining systems are controlled by human nations unable to exert territorial claims outside of their home systems, and thus do not create a sizeable impact on the political division of the Orion Arm.
