History
The French Navy, officially the Marine National, is often also referred to as La Royal or the Royal. The current fleet is the successor of the Free French Navy that fought under General De Gaulle in World War II.Following the Battle of Mers-e-kebir and the scuttling of the Vichy fleet at Toulon, the Free French Navy was vastly reduced in both size and capabilities. It nevertheless fought admirably against the Scinfaxi during the French evacuation of West Africa. The battleship Richelieu served particularly gallantly at the battle of Senegal, where it successfully shelled and destroyed a Scinfaxi Transport. After Quebec was given to the French the navy relocated to the small city of Gaspe. It is at Gaspe that the navy was rebuilt.
Colonization Era
Present day
The Marine Nationale has always prided itself on small numbers of incredibly powerfull vessels. Without a doubt the French destroyer classes are regarded to be the best in the Orion Region. The Navy maintains few capital ships, but its indigenous Battleship and Battlecruiser designs are considered to be exceptionally well rounded and balanced designs.
Doctrine
French Naval Doctrine calls for the unrelenting Defense of French Soil. It is born out of the failure of World War II when the German Blitzkrieg tactics overran French Defenses within weeks. This drive has resulted in the French Navy continually investing vast sums of money in order to maintain technological superiority over potential enemies. This investment has also resulted in the creation of the colossal Valoine Defense Grid in the French Capital System . French Naval Doctrine has long shunned the masses of colossal Dreadnaughts like those in the posession of Royal Navy, instead opting for a large fleet of superior destroyers and Frigates. The French Destroyer Fleet is superior to that fielded by any other nation.
