When we began working on DoV as a Sins project, we carried over a lot of Empire at War-like gameplay elements. Dawn of Victory's focus is heavily weighted to military rather than economic or imperial management, with more emphasis on individual battles and strategic gameplay. A gameplay mechanic that allows us to do this is the minefield. While offense needs to be handled tactically too, we felt defense needed to be more than "construct 5 hangar defenses". Attacking players needed to scout and use that intelligence to figure out at what point to jump from; consequently, defending players needed to anticipate fleet formations.
Dawn of Victory features two types of mines. There are the constructable versions that can be set up as needed around player-owned gravity wells. There are also droppable remote/timed mines, available on a few ships, that can be used to cover a retreating fleet's flank or as a temporary defense or ambush when enemy fleets are detected.
In the interest of time, video size, and as an attempt to stay on topic (note this video was done much differently than our last one for a reason), a few things were left out. First, the mine models and icons are temporary. They currently use the Missile Turret model, which looks OK but will be replaced before release. Second, the R/T mine has a few modes that were hinted at in the video. Not only can the deployable mine be detonated instantly, they have timers of 5, 10, and 20 seconds. Leading your target is no longer just for first person shooters anymore.
Anyway, here's the video. Now presented in 720p!
